TO UV OR NOT TO UV
Safety isn’t a one-size-fits-all sort of thing. It’s not even a one-size-fits-most, whatever that actually means. Masks are the standard and what does the heavy lifting as far as shielding you. Hand sanitizers and sprays help you get off any germs not taken out by simply washing your hands. And then, there are gizmos such as this: a UV wand.
Ultraviolet light, UV-C in particular, has been utilized in sterilizing equipment in places like hospitals for some time. Its germicidal potency is well known by now. Yet, they aren’t more common. Before all of this, people would just carry hand sanitizer in purses or stored in cars already, casually. Why not UV lights?
Well, obviously nobody expected to need something of this potency on their person before now. Most UV lights also weren’t seen as portable. And, of course, maybe people didn’t use them for the fact that it is a UV light.
Think of it like holding a tiny piece of the sun. You shouldn’t look directly into the light as it’ll do about the same thing looking too closely at the sun will do, even more easily given your proximity to it. You also shouldn’t ever use it on your skin. But for inanimate objects? It’s one of the most effective germ killers we’ve got, and now you’ve got it in the palm of your hand.
