Sounds Weird, Works Well
Electrotherapy. It’s a simple word. In fact, it explains exactly what’s going to happen. There will be electricity, and there will be therapy. In this case the therapy is delivered via electrical impulses to muscles minor aches and pains. Consider it a relaxing massage for any of your muscles.
Simple, right? So, why then does it sound so scary?
Our theory: it’s because the word starts with “electro-”. We’re told from a young age to fear electricity. Lightning is scary. Outlets are dangerous. Wires are not toys. Sparks are not fireflies. And so by the time we get to “therapy”–a word associated with soothing one’s soul, or healing one’s ailments, whether they be physical or mental–we’re already giving the entire word some serious side eye.
Which is why we propose we do this the European way, wherein the adjective comes second. Try this: Therapy-Electrique! Sounds very cool, right?
Or maybe it just sounds like a French band from the 80s.
Ugh. Back to the drawing board!
